Thomas Ocie Williams, who ran the feed store on Main for near about forty years, passed this week at eighty-six. Most folks around here don't think about how many seasons a man like that holds together, watching the same families come through the same door, knowing their kids, knowing what their soil needed and when. He was one of those men who understood the valley not from a distance but from behind a counter, and that kind of knowledge doesn't transfer to ledgers. The chile harvest will come on like always, and the trucks will load out for market, but there'll be one less person around here who remembers how things were before, and that matters more than outsiders tend to understand.
